Case study
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)
The way credit card providers deal with their customers was up for review, and BIS wanted ordinary consumers to be involved in the consultation process. I helped them simplify the consultation, and when the consultation was over I helped them communicate the results of the consultation and explain exactly what the new laws about credit cards would be.

Reviews

The work Corinne did for our consultation on credit cards was remarkable, creative and beautifully-presented. On a very short timescale, she turned a 100-page document into 10 crisp, readable pages bringing credit card policy to life for everyday consumers. The accompanying podcast summary she arranged was magnificent: clear, straightforward and engaging.” October 28, 2009

Corinne is an excellent copywriter who condensed a long-winded dry and complex consultation document into a friendly, easy to understand concise two pager which she styled beautifully. She then recorded a great podcast explaining the issues, in this case the compexities of credit card agreements. That piece of work produced fantastic results and became one of our most popular consultations ever. Corinne also worked incredibly quickly — a serious plus when dealing with government, as was tremendously good value. Would definitely hire her again. Impressive.” April 27, 2011

Help the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (that’s BIS for short, though I never know whether that’s pronounced like an early 90s sugar-pop-punk group or ‘biz’, anyway) make the way we deal with debt right here in the UK that little bit better by telling them what you think of their ideas.

Listen to the amazing podcast, download my plain language version, read the whole thing, or just flip through it here:

Simply Understand started nearly a year ago with the not-so-simple idea of making a small corner of the UK’s democracy more, well, democratic!

Everyone know how much of a struggle it can be to get your story heard by government institutions. Consultations are supposed to be one way for us to get through, but so often they’re so complicated and overwhelming. Sure, sometimes they deal with complicated subjects, but no matter how complicated they are, don’t we all have a right to understand and contribute to them?

With that in mind, today Simply Understand’s been given it’s first chance at a 100% genuine, official consultation makeover! The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills are consulting on Credit cards and store cards. Their 100 page original consultation has been reduced to just 10. You can:

The first step?

Is this the first step on the road to making all government consultations easier to understand? It could be, but only if it actually works. And that means more people replying, more people downloading and more people listening and understanding. And if you read it through, and there are bits you don’t understand — well, I think that’s helpful too, and you should tell them that. Because if you can’t understand it now, how’s it going to help anyone?

Pass it on!

Email, Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, Digg, heck even Myspace it, or just print it out and give it to people (double sided to save paper). The more people see this, the more chance we’ve got to encourage more easy to understand consultations!
